Forty-nine times twenty-nine. Sixty-three times eighteen. Two-digit by two-digit is the size at which the standard algorithm stops being optional and starts being the only sane method, and it is exactly what fifth grade asks for. A second station on the same standard runs smaller products into a combination lock, so a cadet can warm up before the belt. The numbers are drawn fresh every run โ there is no version of this to memorize.

The recurring fifth grade error is forgetting the placeholder zero on the second partial product, which lands the answer roughly a tenth of where it should be. If 49 ร 29 comes back near 700 instead of near 1,400, that's the one.
