The airlock opens on a two-digit code and the code has to be worked out first. Fifty plus twenty-eight. Thirty plus nineteen. Dialing each digit onto its own wheel makes the place-value idea physical — the tens wheel and the ones wheel are separate things, and adding fifty only ever touches one of them. This is a first grader's earliest look at numbers past twenty behaving predictably, and it is the standard that makes second grade's two-digit work possible.

Drawn from the same pool the activity uses, so these are the real thing rather than an illustration. The numbers change on every attempt — there is no fixed set to memorize.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 50 + 28 = ? | 78 |
| 50 + 14 = ? | 64 |
| 20 + 24 = ? | 44 |
| 40 + 17 = ? | 57 |
| 20 + 15 = ? | 35 |
The give-away error is answering 50 + 28 with 78 when the numbers are friendly and 708 when they aren't — digits pushed together rather than added. The two separate wheels usually surface that misconception faster than a written column does.
Official wording, quoted in full — not our summary of it:
| 1.NBT.C.4 | Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten. |
