Adding Tens Within 100 to Crack the Airlock (Grade 1)

The airlock opens on a two-digit code and the code has to be worked out first. Fifty plus twenty-eight. Thirty plus nineteen. Dialing each digit onto its own wheel makes the place-value idea physical — the tens wheel and the ones wheel are separate things, and adding fifty only ever touches one of them. This is a first grader's earliest look at numbers past twenty behaving predictably, and it is the standard that makes second grade's two-digit work possible.

What this station asks for

Five questions it might ask

Drawn from the same pool the activity uses, so these are the real thing rather than an illustration. The numbers change on every attempt — there is no fixed set to memorize.

QuestionAnswer
50 + 28 = ?78
50 + 14 = ?64
20 + 24 = ?44
40 + 17 = ?57
20 + 15 = ?35

👀 What to watch for

The give-away error is answering 50 + 28 with 78 when the numbers are friendly and 708 when they aren't — digits pushed together rather than added. The two separate wheels usually surface that misconception faster than a written column does.

The Common Core standard behind it

Official wording, quoted in full — not our summary of it:

1.NBT.C.4Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
