Add Within 10 to Bring Starlight Station's Lights Back On

The station's lights are out and the rocket has drifted off course. To bring it home, a kindergartner works out a small sum — three plus four, two plus five — and slides the rocket along a number line to land on the answer. That sliding is the point: the number line stops addition being a fact to memorize and turns it into a distance you can see. Five questions, drawn fresh every time, inside a story where getting it right actually does something.

What this station asks for

Five questions it might ask

Drawn from the same pool the activity uses, so these are the real thing rather than an illustration. The numbers change on every attempt — there is no fixed set to memorize.

QuestionAnswer
3 + 3 = ?6
5 + 1 = ?6
3 + 2 = ?5
2 + 3 = ?5
3 + 5 = ?8

👀 What to watch for

Most five-year-olds start by counting every object from one. Counting on from the larger number is the jump you want, and the number line makes it visible — start at 6, take 3 hops, land on 9. If they drag the rocket all the way back to zero first, that's the habit to gently interrupt.
